Randy Boyd, former GOP candidate for Governor of Tennessee, has been named the interim President of the University of Tennessee system, and the fanatical protesting has already started.
I ask those who have attacked his character and fitness for the job to examine his career. Radio Systems Corporation, Boyd’s company, is well-known for its annual Bark for Your Park campaign—which helps fund new off-the-leash dog park construction—and its generosity in regard to employee benefits. In fact, Boyd would leave his lofty position at the company to serve the state of Tennessee as the Tennessee economic and community development commissioner.
While many of us—myself included—may disagree with aspects of his political agenda, Mr. Boyd is a decent man and highly regarded among the greater Knoxville community. The notion that he is unable to carry out the task of UT system president merely because of his political beliefs is imprudent and antithetical to any aspiration for a more diverse campus community.
Welcome to the University of Tennessee, interim president Boyd -- I wish you the best of luck.
