Wednesday afternoon, the UT Clery Compliance released a Safety Notice via email about a fondling incident that occurred on Wednesday morning.

Around 11:30 a.m., a female student reported the incident of assault to UTPD, after reporting the assault to Title IX. She stated that while walking on Melrose Pl. near Melrose Ave. around 9:45 a.m., a male quickly ran behind her and grabbed her buttocks without her consent. The male suspect then ran into a nearby alley.

The female student does not know the identity of the male suspect.

The Safety Notice explained that fondling, as defined by the Clery Act and the FBI, occurs when a suspect touches a victim for the suspect’s sexual gratification, without the victim’s consent. Victims are also deemed unable to give consent when they are underage or temporarily mentally incapacitated.

Under Tennessee law, fondling is included under the crime of sexual battery.

The Safety Notice encouraged students and all members of the UT community to report all criminal and suspicious activity as soon as possible. Emergencies can be reported to UTPD at 865-971-3111 or through the LiveSafe app.

UTPD’s non-emergency phone number is 865-974-3114.
