A hazardous material spill evacuated a small area of campus around the Science and Engineering Research Facility Sunday afternoon.
An "undetermined chemical odor from an unknown source" in the building led to the evacuation, according to UT Police Department Public Information Officer Lola Alapo.
Alapo said the spill was caused by a machine malfunctioning, forcing chemical odors out of it. Students, faculty and staff were alerted by email and text message of the spill by the UT Alert System at 4:56 p.m.
The Knoxville Fire Department, UTPD and the UT Department of of Environmental Health and Safety responded to and investigated the spill. No injuries or illnesses were reported.
Activities in the area were suspended, but all have now been resumed and the building has been reopened.
